>> pam :off the top at eleven: an east bay police department. cracking down on cold cases -- trying to clear out some old files, and bring some long sought after criminals. to justice. tonight, pinole's police chief sits down with us. one-on-one. to discuss what he is hoping to gain from the new unit. kron-4's philippe djegal has our exclusive. >> : "i understand that its probably a needle in a haystack." >> phillip :for pinole investigators, time is not on their side. >> : "but i'm very very confident that with our team, with the relentless pursuit of being able to uncover that needle this is going to be able to do that." >> phillip :nearly two years as chief of police in pinole. neil gang wants to finally bring closure to the amber swartz- garcia abduction case from 1988.

>> : "that's our oldest case. then we also have two other cold case homicides that we're still looking at and still working." >> phillip :including the bowling alley execution of 19- year-old brandon young in 2008. >> : "he was sitting with his facing the bowling lanes somebody came up behind him and riddle him with bullets, and it was just execution style cold blooded homicide." >> phillip :as for amber, she vanished from her front yard in 1988 and hasn't been seen since. though this is what an aged- enhanced photo shows she'd look like today. a convicted child molester and killer confessed to her murder in 2007. still, her body has never been found. and, for that reason, on the 27th anniversary of amber's dissappearance last month, her mother kim saying she hasn't given up hope that her daughter is still alive. >> : "i believe its entirely possible. jaycee duggard was found alive after many years." >> phillip :in 2013, pinole

police officially reopened amber's case. >> : "so, philippe, let me take you down." >> phillip :and, just a few months ago, chief gang launched a cold case unit to sift through boxes and boxes of old case files and evidence. clearly, by shear volume no easy task. >> : "whether its suspect leads, whether its evidence, whether its witnesses. so, you could see the magnitude of what the challenges is for these investigators to go through. when we say we're looking at cases, this is now hopefully people will understand is exactly what that means." >> : "memories deteriorate over time." >> phillip :daryl england spent 28 year with the contra costa county sheriff's office and is one of two reitred investigators recruited to this unit. >> : "i was the sergeant supervising the office when laci peterson washed up on the shores of richmond." >> phillip :england will work with detectives in the criminal investigations division, supervised by detective

sergeant rich jensen to crack these unsolved cases. >> : "we didn't have the technology in 1988 that we do now and so getting it organized and getting it so we can figure out who suspects are, we have t talk about, that's our emphasis right now." >> : "they're just very vigilant and they're not gonna give up." >> phillip :the year she was born amber swartz' father was killed in the line of duty working as a pinole police officer. added inspiration, chief gang says, to bring closure to this case. >> : "if that needle is in this haystack, in one of those boxes we need to find out where it is and uncover that." >> phillip :in pinole, philippe djegal kron four news. >> pam :thousands of bart riders delayed today. after a power line crashed down at the walnut creek bart station. it shutdown service in both directions between lafayette and concord for several hours. kron-4's jeff bush joins us now from lafayette. where people were stranded, while they waited for bart to get back on track. jeff? >> jeff :it was a rough day for

writers were stuff here at the lafayette station in the summer heat. the heat only added to the misery. there was a wall of people at least four deepwaiting on the sidewalk outside the lafayette bart station. the problems started at six. everyone was told to get off the trainstranded and crankythe only thing they could do is waitand waitand wait. many were complaining about the lack of communication and the lack of bus bridges and how long it was taking to get things back to normalit was not a good day to depend on bart. when the buses finally did show up, it was a mad rush to get on boardas you can imagine, the inconvience of the day took it's toll on people's moods. >>:i've been out here waiting in the hot weather. there's nobody who has come out here and told us what to do. there was no information that was given to us when we were on the bart train itselfsaying why we had to get off at lafayette.

>>:it's just crazy out here. everyone is just trying to go home and i'm trying to go home myself. the first bus to show up was an hour after six o=clock. and they take people from one stop to another stop. so, the problem that i have with bart is that you have all these people stranded and nobody knows where the buses are going. >>:horribleit was crazy. people were fighting to get on the first busscreamingscary. >> jeff :bart service resumed about 8:45 this evening. i'm jeff bush, live in layfette, kron four news. >> pam :today in livermore. firefighters were able to fully contain a raging grass fire that burned at least 53- acres. and destroyed several structures. the wildfire broke out in the area of tesla road and clifford drive at around 4. fire crews were able to contain the fire almost 3 -hours later.

but not before it damaged a home and destroyed a barn. the homeowner was thankfull of the firefighters efforts. >>:luckily they saved the car and the saddles and house as well so thanks to the firefighters. >> pam :one firefighter was injured when trying to cut out the blaze known as on the injury and investigators are still trying to figure out the cause of the fire

>> pam :in oakland today. a possible new development in a cold case disappearance from the 1990's. involving a teenage girl. kron 4's charles clifford has details. >> charles :the trace descent to this home where christian used to lift. kristen used to live there after they found this and they contacted the police department. the dog is strange to find human remains--trained >>:today we are looking into seeing if there's anything meal to follow up on to take the next up in this case. just to bring closure not to just the family but the community. >> charles :he also took soil samples and it should help

>> pam : a daycare worker in novato. was arrested on a child molestation charge. authorities say, 43-year-old emilio bencomo. inappropirately touched a 5-year-old girl, at happy hippos daycare. the novato daycare also happens to be where bencomo lives. he was arrested yesterday. and has since bailed out. officials have already notified parents and guardians of children attending the daycare. about the incident. a north

removal of the confederate flag we asked fans who came out this weekend to say what they thought about it. some thought it was politically motivated and they should stay out of it. others thought nascar did the right thing. >> reporter :here in san jose to children are in critical condition with burns after a fire erupts in their home. take a look right here, those are the fingerprints of the children. the children had to jump out of the window in order to estate. another person was also injured in this fire she suffered smoke inhalation. these people smashed the window in the front of the home to help the fire get out police are investigating the cause of the fire >> reporter :the attorney says for office will take over the
